Here's a brief list of where you can get hats in Great Britain (or overseas), there are physical stores and online retaliers.
Kensington based store, main distributer of Christys Hats and a lovely second hand clothes store (3 of them actually). Contains a great range through their website and every hat is made to order so they also take special requests if you contact them.
Classic shop, decent selection, quite pricy, sales staff are great and will measure you up before they do anything. Make sure you say hello to Binks the cat if you visit. It's currently under threat of closure due to redevelopment of the area.
Inventors of the bowler and the oldest family owned hatters in the world. Quite pricy, but the range is good for felt hats, flat caps, panamas and everything in between. Very helpful and friendly sales staff. Certainly worth a visit for the history involved.
Well priced fur and wool felts, good variety of other style too. Located in north London, if anyone visits, please let me know about their experience. They sell on ebay too.
Australian distributer of Akubra hats, prices are very good and delivery to other countries doesn't cost the earth.
Another good Akubra distributer, they have the Federation IV model which is solely available through them, a big hit with the Indy fans.
If you want a Panama, this should be your first stop. A distributer of almost all qualities of Panama, so there's definately something to suit your budget.
Massive selection of hats, the straws and cowboy hats in particular are great. Stocks a lot of name brands such as Stetson and Borsalino.
Good selection of name brands such as Stetson, Jaxon, Tilley & Christys.
Run by hatter Art Fawcett, choose from a standard set of limited editions or design your own. Famed for his classic designs harking back to the golden era.
Hatters based in Chicago, run by Graham Thompson, fabulous and classic designs. Offers full cleaning, re-blocking and re-furbishment services.
Custom hat maker, known for his re-productions of the Indiana Jones hats. Great value for money, choice of beaver or rabbit felt. Good range of accessories to go with your hat too. Also offers re-blocking services.
Johnnyphi, is a lucky guy who in 2007 stumbled upon a glorious find of hundreds of unworn, unsold fedora's from the 40's, 50's and 60's. He has sold many of these, but you may be lucky enough to find a beautiful Adam in your size or a nice Stetson for you a friend.
A quick run-down of some of the common styles...
Soft felt hat with a wide brim, as seen on everyone from Bogart to Bond. My personal favourite.
Soft felt or material hat with a short brim that is sharply turned up at the back. Similar to a fedora.
Felt (or straw) hat with a flattened top and a short brim. Can be short-crowned version of a trilby in Britain
